In the fall of 2023, San Juan County adopted a 32-hour work week (32HWW) as a cost-saving measure to support the County’s fiscal health in the face of rising wage and inflation pressure. The schedule change has also supported employee recruitment and retention efforts and the well-being of islanders.

The County conducted periodic reviews to track the pilot project:

The following County services remain:

  • County offices remain open to the public and hold regular hours of operation. Some departments have adjusted their hours or closed one day a week, but their hours of operation remain properly noticed and consistent.

  • The Sheriff’s Office and its services remain unimpacted, as do other emergency responses performed by the Departments of Emergency Management, Public Works, and Superior Court Services.

The two-year report serves as the culmination of the County’s reporting on the 32HWW pilot initiative, as it is now the standard for operations. Moving forward, the County will use community feedback and the lessons learned to refine our practices, address challenges proactively, and ensure the long-term success of this model in service to both employees and the public.
