Engage San Juan County

San Juan County is a community of islands connected by a marine highway system operated and maintained by Washington State Ferries (WSF). The largest ferry system in the United States, WSF is the lifeblood of San Juan County, providing transportation of people, goods and services to and between each of the major islands 365 days a year. Because of the complexities involved in this service, San Juan County has developed this informational page to help assist residents and visitors by consolidating timely information, links to useful sites, FAQs, and opportunities for feedback into a single, user-friendly location. San Juan County Ferry Information

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW198865542 BCX0">San Juan County is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) with support from a consultant team and a grant from the Department of Commerce. All counties, cities, and towns in Washington state planning under the <a href="https://mrsc.org/explore-topics/planning/gma/growth-management-act" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Growth Management Act</a> (GMA) are required to periodically review and update comprehensive plans and development regulations to ensure consistency with state laws and the expected population and employment projections for the next 20 years. The Climate Element is being developed separately and in coordination with the Comp Plan update. 2025 Comprehensive Plan Update

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW67311487 BCX8">In the fall of 2023, San Juan County adopted a 32-hour work week (32HWW) to maintain fiscal health in the face of rising wage and inflation pressure, improve employee recruitment and retention to strengthen the workforce, and prioritize the well-being of islanders.The County is conducting periodic reviews to ensure service levels are being maintained. <div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW83381888 BCX8">The south end of Lopez Island&rsquo;s vulnerable coastlines and roads have been studied since 2002. The County conducted a MacKaye Harbor Road Relocation Feasibility Study in 2017 (available at this link) and is working to collect best available science for long-term planning and infrastructure sustainability. Sea Level Rise Adaptation, Lopez Island   

San Juan County is developing a plan for a shared-use trail connecting the Town of Friday Harbor with neighborhoods, public lands, and other amenities. The project is in development and the public will have multiple opportunities to come together and provide feedback and input. HistoryThe idea for a trail to was born out of multiple planning documents, meetings, and community surveys that identified the need for &ldquo;a well-planned transportation system of multi-modal trails&rdquo; that &ldquo;connects people to places.&rdquo; Zylstra Lake Preserve as one possible destination, lies at the center of multiple corridors that have been identified in over two decades of the County&rsquo;s Parks Trails and Natural Areas Plan, which is now called the <a href="https://www.sanjuanco.com/1143/Recreation-Open-Space-Stewardship-Plan-R" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Recreation, Open Space, and Stewardship Plan.</a> These corridors are important opportunities to:<ul><li>Promote nonmotorized transportation</li><li>Provide safer conditions for biking and walking</li><li>Improve connectivity between popular sites</li></ul>FundingOn December 23, 2022, Representative Rick Larsen (District 2) announced that the project would receive $5.28 million in federal funds. Earmarked from the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Spending Package, the funds support transportation-related Member Designated Projects that benefit the communities they serve, are generally supported by local elected officials, are enumerated in adopted plans, and encompass a feasible and achievable timeline.
